this weekend

Yesterday we decided to get out of the city and drive to Buckinghamshire. We visited Waddesdon Manor, a crazy renaissance-style chateau belonging to the Rothschild family. I loved the architecture, so dramatic!

Inside was the most amazing collection of paintings, from English portraiture to Dutch Old Masters. The interiors were as lavish as you would expect. We even saw a writing desk belonging to Marie-Antoinette, which I think cost £6000 in 1881! Sadly we weren't allowed to take photos inside.

We wandered around the grounds, and found an Anish Kapoor sculpture in the Aviary. "Mountain' is constructed from layer upon layer of aluminium. We also found an exhibition of Andy Warhol portraits of famous Jewish people in the coach house, including George Gershwin and Einstein.

After that, we drove up to Dunstable Downs. We watched gliders being launched from the fields below, and had a cup of tea in the cafe looking out at the most amazing views.
